Team Formation

TEAM FORMATION

  1. Teams are initially constructed based upon school attended, first, and then geography as much as possible to allow classmates to play together, maximize community involvement, and minimize travel commitments for practices.

  2. Teams are set up by the grade level commissioners.

  3. From year to year players will have the opportunity to play for the same team.

  4. Players will have the opportunity to play against players of the same grade level; we do not combine grade levels. This improves the safety of the game because the size and experience of the players is more closely matched.

  5. Players will have the opportunity to travel to other local metro areas to play against other competitive teams.

  6. BYF’s Goal Minimum roster sizes have been set to the outlined below. Due to increased physical demand and longer sustained injuries, rosters sizes increase with grade level.

  7. Any special requests must be submitted to the Blaine Youth Football Board for review.

FLAG FOOTBALL (K – 1ST)

  1. Teams are set up by the grade level commissioner.

  2. Teams are formed by school attended and geography as much as possible

  3. Allowances may be made for siblings/cousins and those living in the same household to play on the same team.

  4. Subsequent flag football years, players are eligible to play for that same team.

TEAM FORMATION (2ND - 3RD) GRADE

  1. Teams are set up by the grade level commissioner.

  2. Teams are formed by school attended, first and then geography as much as possible.

  3. Allowances may be made for siblings/cousins and those living in the same household to play on the same team.

  4. No coach or buddy request will be considered.

  5. Subsequent years, players are eligible to play for that same team.

  6. The number of teams may be reduced due to attrition and the need for an increase in the goal minimum number of players per roster.

  7. At such time that a team needs to be dissolved, if more coaches than teams are available the coaches that get to continue coaching will be determined by a board vote based on the coach’s interviews.

TEAM FORMATION (4TH – 8TH) GRADE

  1. Teams will initially be formed with the intent to keep the players from the previous year’s teams together.

  2. The number of teams may be reduced due to lower registration numbers and an increase in the goal minimum roster size. At such time that a team needs to be dissolved, if more coaches than teams are available, the coaches will be determined by a board vote based on the coach’s interviews.

  3. Players in the following categories will be required to attend an evaluation process prior to the beginning of the season and will be placed into a draft:

    1. Players new to Blaine Youth Football 4th thru 8th grade.

    2. Players from a dissolved team.

    3. Players that wish to try and play for a different team.

    4. Disclaimer for athletes: Entering the draft does NOT guarantee that you will be drafted by a new team unless there is a problem with the current coach that has been addressed by the board.

    5. Disclaimer for coaches: a player enters the draft is not a reflection on you as a coach and this should not be held against the player.

  4. The intent of the draft is to provide a method for establishing teams through equitable selection process by coaches with oversight by the grade level commissioners and board members.

  5. Players entering the draft are not allowed to request a specific coach.

  6. Players, as defined above, will be required to attend an evaluation session(s). Evaluation session(s) are designed to allow players to demonstrate their skills on the field.

  7. Players will be evaluated by the player development committee along with the grade commissioner. Coaches are encouraged to attend. Each coach will be given the evaluation results.

  8. 'New to the Program' players unable to attend the evaluation session (s), will be randomly placed on a team after all of the evaluated players have been drafted based on the process defined below.

  9. If there is more than one player that needs to be randomly placed, the process will continue until all coaches have received an additional random player. This process will be repeated until all players that missed the evaluation sessions have been placed on a team.
